Bangkok.- El presidente de Filipinas, Rodrigo Duterte, amenazó con enviar a la cárcel a aquellas personas que rechacen inocularse la vacuna contra la covid-19, mientras el país todavía lucha por contener su peor rebrote.
“Si no quiere vacunarse, haré que lo arresten y luego le inyectaré la vacuna en las nalgas”, dijo Duterte, afamado por sus malos modales, la noche del lunes durante un discurso televisado.
“Tú decides, ponte la vacuna o te meteré en prisión”, amenazó el presidente, según recoge el portal de noticias Rappler.
Aunque la vacunación es voluntaria en Filipinas, el mandatario señaló que buscará los resortes legales dentro de la ley de emergencia vigente para buscar la manera de obligar a la población a recibir la dosis del fármaco.
La advertencia del presidente, quien insistió en que actuará “dentro de la legalidad”, llega a raíz de los bajos registros de vacunación en el archipiélago filipino, donde desde el inicio de la pandemia se han registrado 1,36 millones de casos, incluidos más de 23.600 muertos.
Muchos filipinos son reticentes a vacunarse después de la controversia suscitada en 2016 con una vacuna contra el dengue promovida por el gobierno entre la población infantil y de la que después se supo que aumentaba el riesgo de síntomas severos en pacientes que no hubieran sufrido la enfermedad en el pasado.
Hasta la fecha, el país solo ha logrado vacunar con la dosis completa a 2,1 millones de personas, de los casi 110 millones de habitantes de la nación. El objetivo de las autoridades es lograr vacunar a 70 millones de personas antes de final de año.
